Phil was Labour MP for Sedgefield for twelve years and brings nearly four decades of experience in Labour and North East politics to Hanover.
During his time in Parliament, Phil severed on a number of high-profile Commons Committees including the Defence and Public Accounts committees. He was a member of the Whip’s Office under Ed Miliband and as a constituency MP, he played a leading role in encouraging Hitachi to invest in the North East of England. He was a UK delegate to the Council of Europe and was on the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme with the RAF.
Before entering the Commons as Tony Blair’s successor in 2007, Phil worked closely with the former PM, working in his local office and helping him get selected as an MP in 1983. He also worked in consultancy and as a lay-trade union official.
